This Mercedes-Benz GLS 350d came in with a straightforward complaint, the AC vents were broken. Not one, multiple vents across the cabin. Blades snapped, clips gone, some not directing airflow at all. The owner had been living with it for a while. On a car like the GLS, that is not something you just ignore.
The job required stripping the dashboard to access and replace the vent units properly. It is the kind of interior work that looks simple from the outside but needs patience and the right approach to do without damaging the surrounding trim.

Why AC Vents Break on the Mercedes GLS
The GLS is a big car used by families. Rear passengers, children especially, tend to play with the vent blades, forcing them in directions they are not designed to go. Over time the plastic clips that hold the blade mechanism together give way. Once one blade snaps, the whole vent unit stops working properly.
It is not a quality issue with the car. It is just how interiors wear with regular use. The fix is straightforward, replace the unit. Trying to repair a broken vent blade with adhesive never holds for long. The better answer is a proper replacement.
Stripping the Dashboard — What the Job Involves
To replace the vents correctly, the dashboard trim panels need to come off. On the GLS, the centre console area involves removing the head unit surround, the vent bezels and several trim clips before you can access the vent units behind.
We stripped the dashboard carefully, no prying, no forced removal. Every clip has a release point. Rushing this is how you crack trim panels on a car that costs what a GLS costs. The photos from this job show the dashboard fully open, wiring neatly set aside, nothing disturbed that did not need to be touched.
The rear cabin area was also opened up. The GLS has rear AC vents in the centre console arm rest section, and those needed attention too. Seat side panels came off to access the rear vent wiring and mounting points.
Vent Units — Replaced Across the Cabin
Each broken vent unit was removed and replaced with a new unit. The new vents came with the correct clips and blade mechanism. On the GLS, the front centre vents have a chrome surround that needs to transfer cleanly to the new unit, that was done carefully so the finish matched the rest of the dashboard.
Rear vents with the chrome bezel surround were also replaced. The fitment on reassembly was checked for alignment, on a premium interior, a vent that sits slightly crooked or does not close flush stands out immediately. Everything was fitted flush and verified before the dashboard was closed back up.

Reassembly and Final Check
Once all the new vents were in place, the dashboard was reassembled in reverse order. Every clip was seated properly. The head unit surround went back, the centre console trim was refitted, and the rear panels were closed up.
The AC was run after reassembly to confirm airflow through all the new vents. All blades moved freely, direction control worked as it should, and the finish across the cabin was clean. The owner picked up a car where every vent in the cabin was working again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can a broken Mercedes AC vent blade be repaired or does it need full replacement?
In most cases, replacement is the right answer. Broken vent blades are held in place by small plastic clips that snap when forced. Adhesive repairs rarely hold because the blade takes repeated force every time someone adjusts the airflow direction. Replacing the full vent unit gives you a properly functioning vent with all clips intact. It is more reliable and looks correct on a premium interior.
Q: How long does an AC vent replacement take on a Mercedes GLS?
For multiple vents across the cabin, including dashboard stripdown and reassembly, a full day at the workshop is typical. The time is mostly in the careful disassembly and reassembly of the dashboard trim panels. Rushing this is how trim gets damaged. Done properly, it takes the time it takes.
Q: Will the dashboard trim be damaged during the vent replacement?
Not if the job is done correctly. Every trim panel on the GLS has specific clip release points. A technician who knows the car will release each clip without forcing anything. The risk comes from workshops that pry instead of release. On this job, the dashboard was stripped and reassembled without any damage to surrounding trim.
Q: Is AC vent replacement covered under insurance?
In most cases, no. AC vent damage from regular use is considered wear and tear and is not typically covered under standard motor insurance. If the damage was caused by an accident, it may be claimable depending on your policy. It is worth checking with your insurer, but for most broken vent cases, it is an out-of-pocket repair.
Q: My Mercedes GLS rear vents are not blowing cold air. Is it the vent or the AC system?
These are two different issues. A broken vent blade means the airflow direction cannot be controlled, but air still comes through. If no cold air is coming from the rear vents at all, that points to an AC system issue, not a vent blade problem. It could be a blocked rear AC line, a faulty rear blower, or a system that needs regassing. Bring it in for a check and we can identify whether it is the vent unit or the AC system behind it.
Q: Do you use original Mercedes-Benz parts for interior repairs?
We use parts that fit and function correctly for the specific model. For interior trim components like vent units, the part quality and fitment matter more than the badge on the box. All work is quoted transparently after inspection so you know exactly what is going in before we begin.
