Engine Mounts — What They Do and Why They Fail

Engine mounts are the parts that hold the engine in place and absorb the vibration it produces. On the C200, there are two main mounts, one on each side of the engine. Each one has an aluminium bracket bonded to a rubber centre. That rubber does the isolation work, it absorbs vibration before it reaches the body of the car.

Over time, the rubber hardens and cracks. When that happens, it stops absorbing properly. The engine movement that used to get soaked up starts transmitting directly into the car. That is what the owner was feeling, not an engine problem, just mounts that had done their job and reached the end of their life.

The photos from this job show both new mounts before fitting. Fresh aluminium, clean rubber centres, both units identical. These go in as a pair. Replacing one and leaving the other old does not make sense because the remaining one is at the same age and will follow shortly.

Replacing the Mounts — What the Job Involves

To replace engine mounts, the engine has to be supported from above or below so it does not drop when the old mounts are unbolted. On the C200, this means using a support bar across the engine bay or a trolley jack with a suitable pad under the engine.

The old mounts were removed, the new ones seated in position, and the engine lowered back down onto them. Torqued to spec. No shortcuts here because an improperly torqued engine mount can back off over time and cause worse problems than a worn one.

After fitting, the car was started and checked at idle. The vibration that had been coming through the steering wheel and floor was gone.

Automatic Transmission Fluid — Why It Was Due

The C200’s automatic gearbox uses its own dedicated fluid, separate from engine oil. Mercedes-Benz marks this as a lifetime fill in the service book, but in practice, the fluid degrades over years of use, particularly in city driving where the gearbox is constantly shifting through slow traffic.

Old transmission fluid loses its ability to keep the gearbox components moving smoothly. Early signs are slightly rougher gear changes, a hesitation when pulling away, or small shudders during low-speed shifts. None of these are dramatic, which is why many owners do not act on them until the gearbox needs more serious attention.

On this C200, the fluid was changed as part of the same visit. Fresh fluid in, old fluid out. The gearbox shifts noticeably cleaner after a fluid change on a car that has been running old fluid for a while.

Two separate issues sorted in one visit. Engine mounts gone soft causing vibration through the cabin, and transmission fluid due for a change. Both done together, which is the practical way to handle it when the car is already in the workshop.
