The Job
This Toyota Fortuner came into Evolve Automotive at Guindy for a four-wheel alignment. The first image shows the Hunter HawkEye Elite system active in our dedicated alignment bay, cameras reading the wheel targets, live data on screen. The second image shows the Fortuner pulled into position at the bay entrance before the job began.
The Fortuner is a ladder frame SUV with a separate body-on-frame construction, unlike monocoque European cars. Its alignment specifications and the way out-of-spec geometry presents itself in driving behaviour are different from a saloon or crossover. The Hunter HawkEye Elite reads all four wheels simultaneously and measures every relevant angle, toe, camber, caster and thrust angle, against the manufacturer’s published specifications for the exact model.

Why the Hunter HawkEye Elite Matters
Most wheel alignment machines in Chennai workshops are entry level or mid-range systems that measure two wheels at a time and require manual input of vehicle specifications. The Hunter HawkEye Elite is a different class of equipment.
Four-Camera Simultaneous Measurement
The HawkEye Elite uses four high resolution cameras, one per wheel to capture all alignment angles simultaneously. This eliminates the sequential measurement error that builds up when wheels are read one at a time, particularly on vehicles with any suspension flex or movement during the measurement process. On a heavy SUV like the Fortuner, where suspension compliance under load is a real factor, simultaneous four-wheel measurement gives a more accurate baseline than sequential systems.
Manufacturer Specification Database
The system carries a comprehensive database of manufacturer-published alignment specifications, including Toyota Fortuner variants. The technician selects the exact model and variant, and the system compares live readings against the published figures, not against a generic tolerance. Adjustments are made to bring each angle within the manufacturer’s specified range, not just within a general acceptable window.
The Same System Used at BMW, Audi and Mercedes Dealers
The Hunter HawkEye Elite is the alignment system of choice at BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz authorised service centres in India. It is specified for these brands because the geometry tolerances on European cars are tighter than most generic equipment can measure accurately. At Evolve, the same equipment that handles our European car alignment work also handles every other vehicle that comes in, including the Fortuner.
Wheel alignment is a measurement job before it is an adjustment job. If the measurement equipment cannot read angles accurately enough, the adjustments made against those readings will also be inaccurate. The Hunter HawkEye Elite measures to within 0.01 degrees, the precision needed for both European cars and large SUVs like the Fortuner where small geometry errors translate to significant tyre wear and handling drift over distance. |
Signs Your Car Needs a Wheel Alignment
Chennai road conditions, speed breakers, potholed service roads and kerb impacts, knock alignment out of spec faster than the annual or 10,000 km interval that most service books suggest. These are the signs to watch for between scheduled alignment checks:
- Steering wheel sits off-center when driving straight on a flat road
- Car pulls consistently to one side without steering input
- Uneven tyre wear, one edge wearing faster than the other across the tyre width
- Steering feels vague or requires constant small corrections to hold a straight line
- Vibration through the steering wheel at highway speeds not explained by tyre balance
Any single one of these is enough reason to get alignment checked. Uneven tyre wear in particular is a sign that geometry has been out of spec for some time, the wear pattern that develops does not reverse after alignment is corrected, so catching it early limits the damage.

FAQ — Wheel Alignment in Chennai
Q: How often should wheel alignment be checked in Chennai?
Once a year or every 10,000 km is the standard recommendation, but Chennai road conditions justify checking more frequently. Speed breakers at residential roads and potholed surfaces put repeated lateral and vertical loads through suspension components that shift alignment angles. Any significant kerb impact or pothole hit at speed is reason enough to check alignment before the next scheduled service. If you notice any pulling, off-centre steering or uneven tyre wear, check alignment immediately regardless of when the last check was done.
Q: What is the difference between wheel alignment and wheel balancing?
Wheel alignment is the adjustment of the angles at which your tyres contact the road, toe, camber, caster and thrust angle. Misalignment causes the car to pull, the steering to sit off-centre, and tyres to wear unevenly. Wheel balancing is the distribution of weight around the tyre and wheel assembly to eliminate vibration. An unbalanced wheel causes steering vibration at certain speeds, typically between 80 and 120 km/h. Both are separate procedures. Alignment does not fix a balancing problem, and balancing does not fix an alignment problem.
Q: Does the Toyota Fortuner need four-wheel alignment or just front-wheel alignment?
The Toyota Fortuner benefits from four-wheel alignment. While the rear axle on the Fortuner is a solid rear axle with limited rear toe adjustment, the thrust angle, the direction the rear axle is pointing relative to the vehicle centreline, is a critical measurement. If the thrust angle is off, the car will crab slightly and the front alignment will be set relative to an off-centre reference. A four-wheel alignment check captures this. At Evolve, all alignments are performed as four-wheel checks using the Hunter HawkEye Elite, regardless of vehicle type.
Q: What causes wheel alignment to go out of spec?
The most common causes in Chennai conditions are kerb impacts, speed breaker impacts at speed, pothole hits, and general suspension wear over mileage. Worn suspension bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends allow more movement in the geometry than the car was designed for, which means alignment drifts more quickly and may not hold correctly even after adjustment until the worn components are replaced. On high mileage cars, a suspension inspection alongside the alignment check is worthwhile to identify components that need attention.
Q: Can Evolve align all car types including large SUVs?
Yes. The alignment bay at Evolve handles all passenger car types including large SUVs and crossovers. The Hunter HawkEye Elite system is calibrated for the full range of vehicle types and carries manufacturer specifications for all major passenger car brands sold in India. The Fortuner, Land Rover Discovery, BMW X5, Audi Q7 and similar large SUVs are aligned on the same system as smaller saloons and hatchbacks.
