Skoda Superb steering wheel button replacement at Evolve Automotive Guindy Chennai

If you own a Skoda Superb, Octavia or Rapid that is a few years old, there is a good chance you have noticed the steering wheel buttons starting to feel different. Maybe a button stopped responding. Maybe the scroll wheel on the side feels loose or does not click the way it used to. Maybe you can see that the plastic or leather around the controls is starting to wear.

This is one of the more common issues we see on older Skoda models at our Guindy workshop. It is not a major mechanical problem, but it does affect daily use especially if the button you use for calls, music or cruise control stops working.

Why Do Steering Wheel Buttons Wear Out?

Skoda steering wheel controls are used every single day, sometimes hundreds of times on a long drive. Over time, the small plastic parts inside the buttons wear out, the contact points lose their responsiveness, and the scroll knobs on the side can become loose or stop registering.

On the Skoda Superb and Octavia, the steering wheel has controls on both sides. The left side usually handles phone calls and volume. The right side handles media and cruise control. These are separate switch units that can be replaced individually, you do not need to replace the entire steering wheel.

What Usually Fails First

  • The scroll wheel on the left side used for volume becomes loose or stops scrolling properly
  • Individual buttons stop responding or need to be pressed harder than usual
  • The side switches which control display views and driver assistance settings develop play or click without registering
  • On high-mileage cars, the leather or plastic around the controls starts to crack or peel near the button edges

What the Replacement Involves

Replacing the steering wheel controls on a Skoda is not a job that can be done at a roadside garage. The steering wheel airbag has to be removed first, which requires the right tools and proper handling. Once the airbag is out, the switch units on each side are unclipped and disconnected, the new parts go in, and everything is reassembled and tested.

The job itself takes a few hours. What matters is that it is done properly, the airbag system needs to be handled correctly, and after the work is done, the new controls need to be tested across all functions before the car goes back to the customer.

Parts Used

  • OEM or OEM-equivalent switch units matched to your specific Skoda model and year
  • Scroll knobs replaced as a set if worn
  • Side switch panels replaced where required

On the Skoda Superb and Octavia, the steering controls are modular, each switch cluster can be replaced on its own without changing the full steering wheel. This keeps the job straightforward and the cost reasonable.

All replacements at Evolve are done with a written estimate shared before work begins.

Is This Covered Under Insurance?

Steering button wear is a wear-and-tear item, so standard motor insurance does not cover it. If the buttons stopped working due to water ingress or an electrical fault caused by an accident, that may be a different conversation, but for normal wear, it is an out-of-pocket repair.

The good news is that the parts themselves are not expensive, and the job does not take long. A written estimate will be shared after inspection so you know exactly what it will cost before anything is touched.

When Should You Get This Fixed?

If the buttons are just worn cosmetically but still working, you can keep using the car without any safety concern. But if controls for phone calls, cruise control or the instrument display have stopped responding, it is worth getting it sorted sooner rather than later especially for highway driving where cruise control matters.

A loose scroll wheel that rattles while driving is also worth fixing, it tends to get worse over time and can eventually stop working entirely.

FAQ: Skoda Steering Button Replacement Chennai

Q: Can Skoda steering buttons be replaced without changing the full steering wheel?

Yes. On the Skoda Superb, Octavia and most other models, the control switches on each side of the steering wheel are separate units. They can be replaced individually without touching the steering wheel itself. Only if the wheel is physically damaged does it need to be replaced.

Q: Is it safe to drive with a steering button not working?

The car is safe to drive. Steering button faults do not affect the steering itself. However, if cruise control buttons have stopped working, avoid using cruise control until it is fixed. For other buttons like phone or media, it is more of a convenience issue than a safety one.

Q: How long does the replacement take?

Typically a few hours. The airbag needs to be removed to access the switch units, which adds time compared to a simple trim replacement. We share a time estimate along with the cost estimate before starting.

Q: Does Evolve service all Skoda models for this kind of work?

Yes. We handle electrical and interior repairs on all Skoda models- Superb, Octavia, Kodiaq, Slavia, Kushaq and Rapid. Steering control replacement is a job we have done across multiple Skoda variants at our Guindy workshop.
