This black Jeep Compass 1.4 MultiAir came into Evolve Automotive at Guindy for a scheduled timing kit replacement. The 1.4 MultiAir is a timing belt engine, not a chain which means the belt has a defined replacement interval and missing it carries real consequences. On this car the interval was due, and the full kit was replaced: belt, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and water pump.
The first image shows the engine with the timing cover removed and the old belt still on the cam and crank sprockets. The second image is the car after completion, collected outside our workshop front.

Why the Full Kit and Not Just the Belt
The timing belt on the Jeep Compass 1.4 MultiAir drives the camshafts and the water pump. When the belt is due for replacement, the tensioner and idler pulleys that the belt runs over are the same age as the belt itself. These are bearing-based components that wear with the belt. Replacing the belt alone and leaving aged pulleys in place means the new belt is running on components that may fail within the same service interval.
The water pump on this engine is driven by the timing belt, not a separate serpentine belt. If the water pump fails after a timing belt job, the timing cover has to come off again to access it. Replacing the water pump as part of the same job is the correct approach, the labour to access it is already done.

The 1.4 MultiAir is an interference engine. If the timing belt snaps or skips on an interference engine, the pistons and valves occupy the same space at different points in the cycle. A belt failure means piston-to-valve contact, which is engine damage that goes well beyond the cost of a timing kit. Replacing the belt at the correct interval is not optional maintenance. |
What the Job Involved
Preparation and Access
The engine has to be supported before the timing cover is removed, as the engine mount on the timing belt side needs to come off to give access to the cover. The front wheel and wheel arch liner on the driver side are also removed to reach the lower timing cover bolts. This is not a job that can be done from above the engine bay alone.
Belt and Component Removal
With the cover off, the engine was rotated to top dead centre on cylinder one before any components were disturbed. This is the reference position for timing on reassembly. The tensioner was released, the old belt removed, and the tensioner, idler and water pump taken off for inspection. The pulleys showed wear consistent with their age and mileage, correct decision to replace.
Reassembly and Timing Set
New water pump fitted with a fresh gasket. New tensioner and idler installed. The new belt was routed across the cam sprockets, crank sprocket and water pump in the correct sequence for the 1.4 MultiAir. The tensioner was set to the correct preload and the engine rotated through two full revolutions by hand to verify timing marks aligned correctly before the cover was refitted.
Coolant Refill and Road Test
Replacing the water pump means opening the cooling system. Fresh coolant was added after the pump was fitted, the system bled, and coolant level confirmed before start up. The engine was run to operating temperature, checked for leaks at the water pump and timing cover joints, and the car road tested before return.

Q: When should the timing belt be replaced on a Jeep Compass 1.4 MultiAir?
The Jeep Compass 1.4 MultiAir timing belt replacement interval is typically due at 90,000 km or 5 years, whichever comes first. In Chennai conditions, where stop and go traffic puts the engine through more cold start cycles and heat cycles than mixed driving, erring toward the earlier end of the interval is the sensible approach. The belt should also be inspected if there is any sign of oil contamination from a cam or crank seal leak, as oil on the belt accelerates deterioration.
