This white C300d came into our Guindy workshop for a general service. Current-generation C-Class, AMG Line, diesel. The kind of car where the service needs to be done right — not just the oil changed and sent home.
We went through the full list. Oil and filter, air filter, cabin filter, AdBlue top-up, brake inspection and a wheel alignment check. Here is what we did and what we found.

Engine Oil and Filter
The C300d runs on fully synthetic engine oil, a specific grade required for this engine. Not any fully synthetic the exact specification matters. Using the wrong oil might not cause a problem immediately, but over time it affects how the engine performs and how often certain filters need cleaning.
We used Mannol Longlife 5W-30, which meets the correct specification for this engine. The oil filter was replaced at the same time. On this engine, the filter is a cartridge type, easy to access from the top. The old one came out dark, which is normal for a used service interval. Fresh oil in, level verified, done.
Air Filter — What We Found
This one told a clear story. We placed the old filter next to the new one for the photo and the difference was obvious. The old filter was grey and blocked with dust. The new one was clean white.
Chennai roads do this. Dust levels here are higher than what European service intervals are designed for. A blocked air filter affects how the engine breathes, and on a diesel especially, you want clean airflow at all times. This filter was due. We replaced it.
Cabin Filter Replacement
The cabin filter sits behind the glovebox and cleans all the air coming into the car through the AC and ventilation. When it gets loaded up, the airflow drops and the AC works harder for the same result.
We replaced it with a fresh filter. Simple job but one that makes a difference in cabin air quality, particularly in Chennai where the air outside is not always clean.
AdBlue Top-Up
All current Mercedes diesel cars use AdBlue, a fluid that goes into a separate tank and is used by the emission control system. The car monitors the level and shows a warning on the dashboard when it gets low.
What most owners do not know is that if the AdBlue runs completely empty and the car is switched off, it will not start again until it is refilled. The car does not break down while driving but it will not restart. This is built into the system by design.
The tank on this car was low. We topped it up using a Mercedes-branded 10-litre canister. One thing to note: AdBlue has its own filler cap, clearly labelled, separate from the fuel cap. They must never be mixed up. The filler is in the same area as the fuel cap but marked differently
Brake Inspection and Cleaning
With the car on the lift, we cleaned the brakes using compressed air. The dust that came off was significant. This is normal on a car that has been doing city driving for a while. Brake dust builds up on the disc faces, calipers and backing plates.
The C300d has drilled front discs behind the AMG Line wheels. We inspected pad thickness and disc condition on all four corners. Everything was within limits on this visit. No replacement needed. We noted it and handed back the car with a clear status on brake condition.
Wheel Alignment Check
We put the car on the alignment machine as part of the service. Chennai roads are hard on alignment. Speed breakers, potholes, the kind of impacts that shift the geometry slightly over time. Even a small deviation that you cannot feel while driving will wear the tyres unevenly if left unchecked.
On this car, the readings came back within tolerance. No adjustment was needed. But it is worth checking at every service rather than waiting for the tyres to show uneven wear before investigating.
Every item on this service had a reason. The oil spec matters for this engine. The air filter was genuinely blocked. The AdBlue level was low enough that it needed attention. Alignment was verified. These are not things you want to skip on a car like this. |

FAQ: Mercedes-Benz C300d Service in Chennai
Q: How often does a Mercedes C300d need servicing in Chennai?
The C300d has a service reminder system that monitors the oil condition and tells you when a service is due based on how the car has been driven. In Chennai city use, this reminder typically comes earlier than it would in highway driving because stop-and-go traffic is harder on the oil. Follow the dashboard reminder rather than a fixed kilometre sticker. That is how the system is designed to work.
Q: What oil does the Mercedes C300d require?
It needs fully synthetic engine oil in a specific grade approved for this engine. The grade matters because this engine has tight requirements. Using a generic fully synthetic oil that does not meet the correct specification can affect the engine over time. At our workshop, we confirm the correct oil from the car’s build data before every service.
Q: What happens if AdBlue runs out in a Mercedes diesel?
The dashboard shows a warning first, with a range countdown. If you ignore it and the AdBlue runs completely empty, the car will not restart after the next time you switch it off. It will not break down while you are driving, but it will refuse to start again until the tank is refilled. This is not a malfunction. It is how the system works by design. Keep an eye on the warning when it appears.
Q: Why does the air filter need replacing more often in Chennai?
The service intervals published by Mercedes-Benz are based on European driving conditions where road dust levels are much lower. In Chennai, dust from roads and construction loads the filter faster. A blocked air filter affects how the engine performs. Checking it at every service rather than waiting for the scheduled interval is the right approach here.
Q: Should wheel alignment be checked at every service?
Yes, especially in Chennai. Speed breakers and uneven roads put repeated hard impacts through the suspension, and alignment shifts gradually over time. You may not feel it while driving, but it shows up in uneven tyre wear. Checking alignment at every service catch it early, before the tyres start showing the damage.
Q: Can any workshop service a Mercedes C300d?
Routine items like oil, filters and AdBlue can be handled by a capable workshop that knows the correct specifications for this car. For fault diagnosis, warning light investigation or any work that needs deeper access into the car’s systems, the workshop needs the right diagnostic equipment for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Not all generic scanners can access everything on a current C-Class.
