Why the Car Came In

This E220d came in for a scheduled general service — but the owner had also noticed three specific symptoms that had developed gradually over the preceding months:

  • Slight vibration felt through the cabin at idle — most noticeable at traffic signals with the engine warm
  • Fuel efficiency had dropped noticeably on familiar routes, without any change in driving pattern
  • A full inspection was requested before an upcoming long drive to ensure the car was road-ready

What the Diagnostic Scan and Inspection Found

Diagnostic scan

No major active fault codes were present. However, the scan revealed a pending DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regeneration cycle that had not completed  consistent with the car being used primarily in stop-and-go city traffic where sustained speed for DPF regeneration is rarely achieved. This was flagged for monitoring after the service.

Engine bay inspection

Minor carbon deposits noted on the intake system consistent with the OM654’s direct injection design and Chennai’s slow-speed traffic conditions. Not severe enough to require immediate attention but noted for the next service interval.

Fluid checks

Coolant level was low  below the minimum mark. No visible external leak was found, indicating gradual internal consumption over time. Brake fluid was tested with a moisture meter and found to be absorbing  above the recommended replacement threshold. In Chennai’s humidity, brake fluid absorbs moisture faster than the global service schedule assumes.

Filter condition

The AC cabin filter was heavily clogged with dust and debris the most heavily loaded filter on cars used in Chennai’s environment. A blocked cabin filter reduces AC efficiency significantly and allows unfiltered air into the cabin.

Underbody inspection

No oil leaks found. Suspension components, driveshaft boots, and brake components were all within acceptable parameters.

 

Work Performed

Based on the inspection findings, the following work was carried out:

Engine oil and filter replacement

Drained and refilled with Mercedes-Benz approved 5W-30 fully synthetic diesel engine oil meeting the MB 229.51 specification. The OM654 engine is sensitive to oil specification — using the correct grade is not optional. Oil filter replaced at the same time.

Air filter replacement

The engine air filter was replaced. In Chennai’s dusty environment — particularly during summer months and in areas with construction activity — air filters load up faster than the European service schedule assumes. A restricted air filter affects both performance and fuel consumption.

AC cabin filter replacement

The heavily clogged cabin filter was replaced. The improvement in AC airflow and cooling efficiency is immediately noticeable when the filter is this blocked. Cabin filters on Chennai-driven cars should be checked at every service without exception.

Coolant top-up and system inspection

Coolant was topped up to the correct level using Mercedes-approved coolant. The system was pressure-checked to confirm no active external leak. The low level was logged for monitoring at the next visit.

Brake fluid replacement

Brake fluid was replaced — the moisture content had exceeded the safe threshold. Fresh fluid restores the correct boiling point, which is critical for braking performance under sustained use. Recommended every two years regardless of mileage, and more frequently in humid coastal conditions like Chennai.

DPF health check and diesel system inspection

The DPF was inspected and a forced regeneration cycle was initiated to clear the accumulated soot load from city driving. The injectors and fuel system were checked and found to be operating within specification.

Full vehicle inspection

Suspension geometry, tyre condition and pressure, battery health, drive belts, and all fluid levels were checked and documented. The car was confirmed road-ready for the planned long drive.

ASSYST PLUS service reminder reset

The Mercedes-Benz ASSYST PLUS service interval system was reset to reflect the completed service — this requires the correct software tool and procedure; a manual reset does not update all service counters correctly.

Interior and exterior cleaning

Interior vacuum, dashboard wipe-down, and exterior wash completed as part of the service handover.

Before and After

The owner reported the following differences after the service:

  • Idle vibration — eliminated. The combination of fresh oil with the correct viscosity and DPF regeneration resolved the rough idle completely
